Leading to Reading
By Frank | August 10, 2008
There are many approaches or ways of leading a child or adult with basic academic skills problems to competency in reading. One such approach, and I stress this is but one approach, is by using the phonic method. Understanding letter sound relationships and syllabic construction are important issues for emerging readers. The Orton Gillingham method offers this understanding and it is the system I used in my teaching practice. The core text, Remedial Training for children with specific disability in Reading, Spelling and Penmanship by Anna Gillingham and Bessie W. Stillman informed my introduction to phonics. I recommend it for academic reference purposes. I should stress that an essential prerequisite to understanding this approach is a complete understanding of the multi-sensory approach to learning pathways.
